Week of May 31st!

May – Transition to Kindergarten!

For the next 3 weeks, students will explore their feelings about transitioning into Kindergarten.  As we discuss this transition, students will share their thoughts on what they will experience during the upcoming school year.

Some of the books we will be reading this week are:

       It’s Okay to be Different by Todd Parr
       Kindergarten, Here I Come! by D.J. Steinberg
       Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak
       All Kinds of Friends, Even Green by Ellen B. Senisi


Lessons and activities for the theme:

Math – Students will be able to use rulers, the balance, and start to work on simple adding and subtracting problems.
Art – Children will have access to all art materials in order to create a kindergarten classroom.
Blocks – Students will be shown pictures of different classrooms and be able to build what their next classroom might look like.
Pretend Play– Students will take turns being the teacher and creating a kindergarten classroom.
Writing/ iPad- Students will be able to play learning games related to the theme on the iPad.
Library- Students will have access to books about kindergarten.
Science - Students will be able to work with their classmates to complete a science folder game.
Sensory Table - Sand and Water


Reminders:

       School will be closed Monday, May 30th for Memorial Day.
       School will be CLOSED every Friday in June!
       Pre-K 4 Graduation is Wednesday, June 22nd at 11:00p.m!  Children are to come to school at 11:00 on the 22nd.

Week of May 16th!

May – The Study of Trees!

For the next week, students will learn about trees.  As we investigate this topic, we will work together to find the answers to our theme questions.  Some of the questions include: What food comes from trees?  Who lives in trees? Who takes care of trees?

Some of the books we will be reading this week are:

     •       Pablo's Tree by Pat Mora
       Abiyoyo by Pete Seeger
       A Grand Old Tree by Mary Newell DePalma
       A Tree is For... by Judith Bauer Stamper 



Lessons and activities for the theme:

Math – Students will have leaves to measure their height.
Art – Children will have access to paint materials, leaves, and pinecones to draw trees and make leaf or pinecone prints.
Blocks – Students will be able to create trees from the different types of blocks in the block center.
Pretend Play– Students will have materials to create a home from trees.
Writing/ iPad- Students will be able to play learning games related to the theme on the iPad.
Library- Students will have access to books about trees.
Science - Students will be able to observe the daily changes of their individual catepilliars with magnifying glasses.
Sensory Table - Sand and Water

        Wednesday, May 4th is Star Wars Day!  Children are invited to come to school dressed as their favorite Star Wars Character!  There will be a costume contest in the gym at 9:00 a.m.  Parents are invited!
